Our Knowledge Exchange Environment

The Academy is committed to the two-way sharing of music research, knowledge and skills with communities and organisations outside higher education and academia.

Our approach to Knowledge Exchange (KE) reflects our core ambitions to advance the musical and creative industries in the UK and internationally, and to engage and inspire audiences and learners in music-making and music education across all levels and life stages. 

Through our well-developed partnerships in the music industries, we are engaged in a range of activities where our knowledge, skills and specialist facilities contribute to business and the public and third sectors. Departmental curricula focus on the professional skills that will prepare our students for the widest possible range of artistic and economic opportunities as professional musicians and entrepreneurs. Public and community engagement is a key strand of our activity. Central to this is our annual programme of public performances and events, together with our catalogue of commercially available recordings. The Academy Museum is committed to providing public access to its internationally significant collection of historical instruments, artworks, manuscripts and scores and Open Academy, our community and participation department, works closely with external artistic and community partners across London and the UK.

As a member and consultant of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, the Academy serves as a leading provider of pre-tertiary music education in the UK and internationally. Pathways to music in higher education are enabled through our Junior Academy, Widening Participation and Foundation Year programmes, and we offer a growing range of opportunities for life-long learning and professional development through our short courses and workshops.
