“At nearly 200 years old, it’s the grande dame of British conservatoires, but the Royal Academy of Music is surprisingly forward-thinking”Pianist Magazine
With deep regret we heard this morning that Derek Watkins, professor of trumpet and Commercial Brass Consultant, died on 22nd March. We offer condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Principal of the Academy, said: ‘Derek Watkins was a magnificent trumpet player – another legend gone – and a truly wonderful man. He was in the Academy three weeks ago, dedicated to the last. Derek’s generosity knew no bounds; few will forget his playing at Jim Watson’s celebration fund-raising concert. He will be sorely missed.’
