The cover page of the edition of 'J.S. Bach Suites for solo trumpet' by Edition Peters

As part of Faber Music's prestigious Edition Peters Series, Jonathan has published his own transcriptions of Bach’s 6 Suites for Solo Violoncello (BWV 1007–1012), reimagined for solo trumpet. Using five original sources – from Anna Magdalena Bach to the first printed edition in 1824 – to underpin his editorial decisions, Jonathan has transformed these famous pieces into idiomatic and enjoyable experiences on the trumpet. The edition offers trumpet players a gateway into Bach’s iconic Cello Suites, combining technical challenge with expressive artistry.

As a result of the new edition, Jonathan has also recorded all six of his transcriptions of the Cello Suites, which have been released on the independent classical record label Deux-Elles.

‘Jonathan Freeman-Attwood’s aim in presenting these transcriptions is to open up the miraculous world of Bach’s Cello Suites to trumpet players. He has done so with passion, thorough scholarship and rich imagination. It’s a gift to his instrument and all who play it.’

Steven Isserlis

'What an incredible project, fabulously intelligent and well-realised. A new bible for trumpet players!'

Alongside his roles as Academy Principal, record producer, broadcaster and academic, Jonathan has been re-imagining repertoire for his instrument for three decades in a significant catalogue of music from Monteverdi to Richard Strauss. He has recorded fourteen solo trumpet albums and published almost all the arrangements in print, either for Resonata Press, Boosey & Hawkes or Faber Music. This includes the co-composition of a Sonata for Trumpet and Piano ‘after Richard Strauss’ which has, since 2020, quickly become a staple of international recitals and major competitions, and was published by Boosey and Hawkes.

Recording is a distinctive and fulfilling creative process at the Academy.
