Ian Bostridge joins the Opera and Vocal Studies departments as Visiting Professor

The Academy announces renowned tenor and historian Ian Bostridge as a Visiting Professor. From September 2026, Ian will shape the development of Opera and Vocal Studies students.

Ian Bostridge’s international career has seen him perform at leading concert halls, orchestras and opera houses across the world. Synonymous with the works of Schubert and Britten, his recital career has taken him to the Salzburg, Edinburgh, Munich, Vienna, Aldeburgh, and Schwarzenberg Schubertiade festivals and to the main stages of the Bayerische Staatsoper, La Monnaie and Teatro alla Scala.

Ian has held artistic residencies at the Vienna Konzerthaus, Schwarzenberg Schubertiade, Barbican, Luxembourg Philharmonie, Wigmore Hall, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and Laeiszhalle (Hamburg). Ian has also participated in series at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and Carnegie Hall and has worked alongside with the Chicago, Boston, London and BBC Symphony Orchestras, the Vienna, Berlin, London, New York, Los Angeles and Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestras, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (Amsterdam).

Outside of live performance work, his recordings have won all the major international record prizes and have been nominated for 15 Grammys. Ian is also a celebrated author and academic, having released Schubert’s Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession in 2014 and Song and Self in 2023. He was made a CBE in the 2004 New Year’s Honours.
