Academy flautist Sofía Patterson-Gutiérrez wins the 2026 Gold Medal at the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) Annual Music Competition final, with Academy musicians Binny Supin Yang and Gabrielė Sutkutė also competing.

Proudly supporting the careers of young musicians and artists in the Commonwealth, Europe and USA, The Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) hosts an annual programme of competitions, scholarships, residencies, concerts and events, including the ROSL Annual Music Competition, which is now in its 74th year.

Divided into six sections (Wind and Brass, Keyboard, Singers, Strings, String Ensembles and Mixed Ensembles), young musicians compete each year for over £75,000 in prize money and the opportunity to springboard their musical careers.

Following the solo section finals this spring, the Gold Medal final took place at Wigmore Hall on 15 May, with current student Sofía Patterson-Gutiérrez winning for her performance of works by Ferneyhough, Boulanger and Liebermann. Sofía was accompanied by Academy graduate Jack Redman on piano. She follows Academy alum Ewan Millar, who won for his performance on the oboe in 2025.

A third-year undergraduate flautist and BBC Young Musician finalist, Sofía Patterson-Gutiérrez has performed with orchestras across the UK, including guest principal work with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonia Orchestra. This summer will see her perform with Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, The Hallé (Buxton International Festival), the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and with musicians from the Academy and The Juilliard School at this year’s BBC Proms.

It was a thrilling feeling to win the ROSL Gold Medal and an honour to share the stage with such wonderful musicians and perform before such a distinguished panel.

Of the four finalists at the Gold Medal final, three were Academy trained. Sofía was joined by Royal Academy Opera graduate Binny Supin Yang and Academy piano graduate Gabrielė Sutkutė, who had previously won the Singing and Keyboard finals respectively.

The Academy is proud to have been well represented at the Awards and offers congratulations to Sofía, Binny and Gabrielė for their success in this competition.
