Programme Details

A delicious programme of Rachmaninov’s music for two pianos.

Rachmaninov’s early Suite Op.5 was a musical depiction of four poems and was composed in 1893 in Kharkov; he dedicated the work to Tchaikovsky. Rachmaninov premiered it with the great Russian pianist Pavel Pabst, who taught Sergei Lyapunov and Nikolai Medtner.

The second suite was first performed in 1901; this time Rachmaninov was partnered by his cousin Alexander Siloti, who studied with Liszt in Weimar. (In the same year Siloti conducted the premiere of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no.2 in Moscow, accompanying the composer.) In Los Angeles in the early 1940s, Rachmaninov and Vladimir Horowitz performed Suite no.2 at a Hollywood party – the only time they ever performed together.

This dazzling concert closes with Sherri Lun’s new arrangement – for eight hands – of the slow movement from Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata.
