Jazz Discovery Events

A band of four musicians performs in black and white, lit by spotlights and a smokey background.

Meet Head of Jazz Programmes Nick Smart and current students. There will also be opportunity to watch the Academy Jazz Orchestra in rehearsals.

Monday 21 September 2026

  • 10.15-11am | Registration (Patron’s Room)
  • 11-11.45am | Introduction to the Department with Head of Jazz, Nick Smart (Duke’s Hall)
  • 12noon-1pm | Observation of a second-year 'Repertoire Class' with Pete Churchill (Duke’s Hall)
  • 1-1.30pm | Final Q&A with Nick Smart and current students (Duke’s Hall)
  • 1.30-2.30pm | Lunch Break
  • 2.30-3pm | Student-led tour of the department rooms and Academy building
  • 3-5pm | Open Rehearsal for the Academy Jazz Orchestra with Gareth Lockrane (Duke’s Hall)
    Optional extra event; you are welcome to stay and observe for as long as you wish.

Prospective students are not required to bring their instruments.
