Deviation from Symmetry

This project investigates the possibility of formalising a new harmonic tool for composers grounded in the concept of deviation from symmetry. I begin from the observation that, while equal temperament became fully affirmed in the early 20th century, its structural implications could be more fully integrated into harmonic thought. Rather than understanding equal temperament as an extension of tonality, I approach it as a symmetrical and intervallic system whose internal logic differs fundamentally from late-Romantic harmonic expressivism.

At the centre of my research stands an analytical study of Scriabin’s Preludes Op 74, works for which no fully convincing harmonic account currently exists. Through a systematic and observation-based analysis, I aim to identify recurring structural principles in Scriabin’s late style, particularly in relation to Boleslav Yavorsky’s notion of ‘deviation from symmetry’.Building on this analytical foundation, I seek to formalise a coherent harmonic system, defining its internal rules, operations and compositional possibilities.

Finally, I will test this framework through experimental compositional workshops, evaluating its artistic viability and practical applicability within contemporary practice.
