Patrick Flanaghan is Principal Cor Anglais with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

He teaches Cor Anglais at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Born in London he began his musical education as a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral. Patrick went on to the Purcell School of Music where he studied with Melanie Ragge and won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Celia Nicklin (Oboe) and Geoffrey Brown (Cor Anglais). Whilst at the Royal Academy he won the Leila Bull Oboe Prize. Patrick gained a DAAD scholarship to study with Prof. Emanuel Abbühl at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim. During his time in Germany, Patrick appeared regularly as guest Principal Cor Anglais with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, WDR Funkhaus Orchestra Cologne and NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra Hamburg and as guest Principal Oboe with the Southwest German Chamber Orchestra.

Since returning to the UK, Patrick has been guest Principal Cor Anglais with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Aurora Orchestra. He is also an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. Numerous recordings include Solo Oboe on La Folia’s The Vivaldi Files, Cor Anglais in Rob Keeley’s Triple Concerto and Solo Cor Anglais in Copland’s Quiet City with Septura Brass.

Patrick has given Oboe and Cor Anglais classes at RAM, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Trinity Laban, Hochschule für Musik Mainz and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim.
