Keith McNicoll
BA Mus Perf. RAM (Hon) Professor of Bass and Contrabass Trombone (Brass)
Keith McNicoll has been Principal Bass Trombone/Contrabass Trombone at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden since 2001.
Keith studied at the RSAMD in Glasgow with Bob Hughes. He then joined the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as Principal Bass Trombone and was a member of the BBCSSO Brass Quintet. Three years later, he won the same position with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, succeeding Bob Hughes.
Keith enjoys a diverse career, having played with all the major orchestras in the UK including three years with the LSO until they filled the position, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the World Orchestra for Peace under Gergiev and their Quintet. He has performed in big bands for 5 years including the Carla Bley Big Band.
He has played on numerous film scores such as Wallace and Gromit, Harry Potter, Mission Impossible and Pirates of the Caribbean. Keith is committed to passing his experience on to the next generation and has been involved in many exciting education projects, including leading masterclasses in all the major Conservatoires in the UK and as far as Taipei.
