Femi Temowo

Professor of Jazz Guitar
Femi Temowo poses as if with a guitar in his hands, lit from the side

Femi Temowo is a MOBO Award-nominated musician who grew up listening to West African pioneers such as Fela Kuti, Sunny Ade, and Ebenezer Obey. He later discovered the legendary Charlie Parker and classic jazz albums like Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. Inspired by the great jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery, Femi decided to pursue his passion for the instrument, crafting a unique style based around a fusion of these diverse musical influences.

An early benchmark in his career came in 2002, when he was invited by the critically acclaimed jazz saxophonist and UK hip-hop artist Soweto Kinch to join his newly formed quartet. This phenomenally successful collaboration culminated in a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize, a BBC Jazz Award for Best New Group, and several MOBO Awards.

As his career gained momentum, demand grew for Femi’s versatility and distinctive, melodic sound. His exceptional skill as a guitarist has led to a diverse range of high-profile collaborations across multiple genres. He has performed and recorded alongside many great artists, including George Benson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Courtney Pine, The Roots, Omar, Roachford, Amy Winehouse, Jason Rebello, Eska Mtungwazi, Terri Walker, Jean Toussaint, Don Blackman, and Michal Urbaniak.
