Dr Edmund Finnis
Hon ARAM Professor of Composition
Edmund Finnis' works are performed internationally by some of the world's leading soloists, orchestras and ensembles
Edmund Finnis is a “hugely gifted composer” (Sunday Telegraph) whose music has been hailed as “magical” (The Times), “iridescent, compelling” (The Guardian) and “ethereally beautiful” (Herald Scotland). His works are regularly performed and broadcast, both at home in the UK and internationally.
Finnis’ output ranges from intimate music for soloists and duets to orchestral works, immersive electronic pieces, ensemble music, and music for film. He has written music for some of today’s leading performers (Víkingur Ólafsson, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Jess Gillam, Mark Simpson, Clare Hammond), and ensembles such as Britten Sinfonia, Manchester Collective, 12 Ensemble, BCMG, London Contemporary Orchestra, and London Sinfonietta.
In 2025, Sheku Kanneh-Mason and the Los Angeles Philharmonic gave the world premiere of Finnis’ Cello Concerto (co-commissioned by LA Phil, London Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Dresden Philharmonic). Other orchestral works by Finnis have been performed by orchestras including BBC SSO, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
The Air, Turning – the debut album of Finnis’ music – won the BBC Music Magazine Premiere Award in 2020. This was followed in 2022 by Shades, an album of Finnis’ first two string quartets, described as “exquisite, exceptionally refined” (BBC Music Magazine), and Youth, a cycle of short piano pieces, recorded by Clare Hammond and released to critical acclaim by Pentatone in 2024.
