Dorothea Magonet

Dorothea has been teaching Alexander Technique (AT) at the Royal Academy of Music since 1984

Initially, Dorothea trained in Germany and then worked as a physiotherapist at the Middlesex Hospital, London, for seven years before retraining as an Alexander teacher. Since 1984, she has been teaching AT at the Royal Academy of Music and in private practice. She was Head of the Department at the Royal Academy of Music from 1990 to 1998 and organised two international conferences on Teaching AT in Music Conservatoires at the Academy.

Dorothea is passionate about the AT and the potential support it can provide for the young performer. At the Academy she teaches individual lessons and introductory classes, holds open AT workshops and advanced Alexander workshops. She has given talks on teaching AT to musicians and performers at international AT congresses.

Dorothea served on the council of the Society for Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT) for ten years, including as Secretary and Chair. She is an AT teacher trainer and assessor and travels regularly to teach in Japan, Finland, Estonia, and other European countries. She has regularly given workshops to musicians, music teachers, and performers at the Music Academy and Theatre School in Tallinn. Dorothea is Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) registered.

Dorothea is also a Fine Artist and sculptor with a studio practice in West London and has exhibited internationally.
