Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian

Cevanne is a composer, performer and multi-media artist

Her work has been described as 'wide-ranging, dynamic and utterly unique' (BBC Music Magazine).

Working with a sweeping mix of ensembles and innovators, Cevanne creates work for orchestra, band and electronics. such as the 'Sonic Bonnet’ midi-controller she played at her Proms debut — as well as for theatre, including the Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Royal Opera House, and interactive exhibition. Her sound-art installation, and augmented reality book, Rites For Crossing Water for Coventry City of Culture was recently nominated for an Ivor Novello Award.

Her practice of ‘Eye-Music’ scores, where visual structures create physical parameters for composition, has been developed through residencies at the Mahler-LeWitt studios, the Handel & Hendrix Museum, and 575 Wandsworth Road (National Trust) with the London Symphony Orchestra. Music from this residency was recorded for her album, Welcome Party (NMC Recordings), and included her British Composer Award-winning composition Muted Lines commissioned by saxophonist Trish Clowes.

As an educator, Cevanne has led the Advanced Composition course at the internationally renowned Dartington Summer School, and resided as a Visiting Fellow of Girton College, Cambridge. She contributes to practice-led research in arts and health, from professional performance with disability (Headspace, BSO Resound, RNS Moves) to living with brain injury (Rosetta Life, SHAPER KCL). As lecturer in Artist Development at the Royal Academy of Music, she introduces students to technology, hosts collaborations across departments and institutions, and provides mentorship for students during Artist Development’s 'Students Create Festival'.
