Joseph Tong has established himself as one of the most versatile and imaginative pianists of his generation.
Joseph Tong studied at Wells Cathedral School, Christ’s College Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music with Christopher Elton, graduating with a DipRAM in his final recital.
Joseph made his Wigmore Hall debut as winner of the Maisie Lewis Young Artists Award and has performed at the Purcell Room in London, Smith Square Hall, St George’s Bristol, the Cheltenham Festival, throughout Europe and in the USA and Japan with his piano duo partner, Waka Hasegawa. His ongoing Sibelius recording project has seen three CDs released on the Quartz label to critical acclaim, together with regular concert visits to Finland, including recitals at Ainola, the Korpo Sibelius Festival, Joensuu Music Festival and Sibelius Museum in Turku.
A collaboration with the Sendesaal in Bremen resulted in a recording of works by Robert Schumann for Quartz in 2019, which was Instrumental Choice in BBC Music Magazine. Joseph has a keen interest in contemporary music, co-commissioning several new works including Five Trees by David Matthews with the Three Choirs Festival and Presteigne Festival in 2022.
He is also a busy chamber musician, teaming up with his brother Daniel to give duet recitals at venues including Conway Hall in London, the Barber Institute, Birmingham and the Wye Valley Festival. Joseph also gives duo recitals with the violinist Fenella Humphreys, recording an album of Sibelius for Resonus Classics in 2020 which was selected as Chamber Choice in BBC Music Magazine.
Joseph was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2008 and is a visiting teacher at Wells Cathedral School. He has recently been on the faculty of the Chetham’s International Piano Summer School and is an adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals.
