King Arthur is a semi-opera on a grand scale, following pagan Saxons, victorious Britons and flirtatious nymphs and shepherds. Purcell weaves together French, Italian and English influences, using a suitably kaleidoscopic palette of instruments, from triumphant trumpets to languorous recorders.
