He came to prominence in 1988, when he was awarded the title of BBC Young Musician of the Year, following his performance of Strauss’ 2nd Horn Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic orchestra.

Following this success, he embarked on a solo career which was to take him across the USA, Japan, Europe, Canada, Mexico and Brazil. His discography also includes British concerti with the LPO, a trio disc with Levon Chilingirian, Peter Donohoe and Anthony Rolfe-Johnson and the Brahms Trio with the Gould Trio.

As a studio player, David can be heard as solo horn on the Harry Potter and Star Wars franchises, alongside numerous other soundtracks and albums.

David was Principal Horn of the LSO from the age of 24, subsequently taking up the same position at the LPO. He is now the Principal Horn of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
