The course - held over four weekends between August 2019 and January 2020 - is aimed at women who are considering applying for a Master’s in orchestral conducting in the UK or abroad.

Participants will be invited to the first weekend this autumn, which will give conductors the chance to enhance their craft and develop wider skills in musical and personal leadership.

Sian Edwards, the Academy’s Head of Conducting, will lead the course alongside guest teachers in a series of workshops and mentoring sessions. Last year Edward Gardner, the Academy’s Sir Charles Mackerras Chair of Conducting joined Edwards to adjudicate the final weekend competition.

Up to six participants who show the greatest potential will be invited back for three further weekends where they will work to develop the skills and experience they need to close the gap between them and the best male applicants for postgraduate conducting programmes. Programme participants will have the opportunity to sit in on Academy postgraduate conducting classes, and will also have access to individual advice and mentoring throughout the year.
