As a composer, I have been fascinated by interdisciplinary collaborations between artists, as well as the experimentation of various structural and textural possibilities in my music. What if these aspects were explored with just a single performer?

Researcher: Yan Ee Toh

My research investigates the processes of sonifying the ‘expanded self’ - a reconceptualisation of the ‘extended self’ in consumer behaviour theory which suggests that humans, knowingly or unknowingly, regard their possessions (e.g. objects, people or places) to be an integral part of their physical self and identity.

Through this project, I will develop a portfolio of ‘expanded solo’ pieces, each incorporating an additional element such as live electronics, visual art or dance. The pieces will be composed with the intention of integrating the solo instrument and additional element as an ‘expanded self’, and the element being an ‘extension’ of the sound to be produced on the instrument. A review of changes in my compositional approaches, as well as additional artistic and practical considerations in developing each expanded solo, will be presented in writing.
