Spectacular chaconnes, singing icicles and mysterious characters of the night: Henry Purcell drew on some of Lully’s most famous opera scenes and turned them into iconic episodes of Restoration theatre that are much loved to this day.
Here we present extracts by Lully alongside Purcell’s deliberate imitations, allowing audiences and student performers to make fully informed comparisons. The performance will be repeated on Thursday 5 February at Les Invalides in Paris.
