PURCELL Overture from Bonduca
LAWES Royal Consort in D
PURCELL Fantasia No 9 in A minor
LAWES Consort Set No 2 in C for 6 Viols
PURCELL Suite from Abdelazer
PURCELL Chacony in G minor

Purcell lived in a world shaped by the English Civil War, where tales of rebellion against rulers captivated audiences. His suite for Aphra Behn’s play Abdelazer accompanied one such story.

Before the conflict, William Lawes was among England’s fi nest composers, creating music of great ingenuity and harmony. Killed while serving in the Royalist army, his work finds a place alongside tragic war stories, culminating in Purcell’s impassioned Chacony.
