Little Boy Blue is a theatrical song cycle that I am composing inspired by the children's poetry of Eugene Field

In this project I document the process of its creation, focusing on how music notation can accommodate theatrical staging elements such as movement, gesture and spatial arrangement – important aspects to this production.

Researcher: Adam Zolty

I will explore how past composers have addressed these concerns in their music, how they navigated the fine line between stage direction and music notation, and how these insights inform my own compositional practice.

My aim is to create a flexible score that allows for dramatic interventions of varying lengths, demonstrating the theatrical influence on musical performance and its notation. Filmed workshop sessions from my song cycle will serve as analytical material for the project, as well as sample promotional materials for eventually staging the cycle.

Presented as a written document and supplemented by visual materials and workshop footage, this research captures my creative journey and findings. Upon completing my MMus, the cycle will be performance-ready, supported by a detailed staging proposal with select video samples. Ultimately, Little Boy Blue represents a bridge between my research and creative aspirations for innovative cross-disciplinary productions.
