Dr Scott Caizley is Head of Widening Participation at the Royal Academy of Music
He is an internationally recognised researcher working at the intersection of education, policy, and social mobility.
Scott's work spans music education research, policy development and professional practice, with a sustained focus on widening participation, inclusion, and social mobility in the arts. He holds a First Class Honours degree from UCL, MPhil with Distinction from the University of Cambridge, PhD from King’s College London as a UKRI Economic and Social Research Council Scholar, and has trained at several UK conservatoires in classical piano performance and composition.
His work is best known for exploring the structural and cultural factors shaping access to higher music education and the wider classical music industry, with particular attention to pathways into conservatoires and the experiences of musicians from underrepresented backgrounds. This work has been widely cited internationally and has informed government briefings, parliamentary inquiries, and policy development across the education, culture, and skills sectors. Scott has authored reports for governments in the UK and overseas, and has advised public, charitable, and cultural organisations on strategy and development.
Before joining the Royal Academy of Music, he served as Lead Policy Officer for Education, Culture and Skills for the City of London, leading research and policy work in close collaboration with national and international leaders to strengthen educational outcomes, expand access to the arts, and support social mobility.
At the Academy, Scott leads institutional work on widening participation, embedding research-informed approaches to access, progression, and inclusion across the Academy’s activities. He is an Ambassador for the Foundation for Education Development, holds advisory roles across the higher education, public, charitable, and private sectors, and was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in 2026.
