Johanna is a German language and song coach who works regularly with UK opera companies

She grew up in Steyr, Austria, and went on to read English and History at Salzburg University, which included a spell of teaching German in England.

After graduating, she returned to England and taught at the universities of Leeds and Sussex. During this time her involvement with the world of opera began, through a summer spent coaching singers at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, where she is still a regular member of the team. This experience led to work with Opera North, in Stockholm and Paris, and with smaller groups based in London and the Southeast.

Aside from her work as a language coach, Johanna is also a translator. She holds a Diploma in Translation from the Institute of Linguists, of which she is a Member (MIL). She has translated principally for EMI, for whom she has produced over 300 CD booklets. She has completed several literal translations of complete opera libretti for study purposes, and produced all the new German dialogue for Die Fledermaus and the St Matthew Passion at Glyndebourne.
