Catriona is a Scottish violinist, composer and artistic director creating cross-genre music rooted in cultural exchange and artistic innovation
With a genre-bending practice that bridges traditional and contemporary forms, Catriona grew up immersed in the folk music of Orkney, before studying at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. Her debut solo album Hert (2023) was released to critical acclaim, launching at Celtic Connections and followed by a sold-out performance at the Edinburgh International Festival. A second solo album is planned for release in 2027.
Catriona is the Founder and Artistic Director of Routes to Roots, an artist-led organisation connecting musicians from around the world to create new intercultural collaborations. Routes to Roots' self-produced events include artist residencies and festivals in Mexico (Rumbo Oaxaca) and Scotland (Rumbo North Isles), as well as collaborations with festivals such as Celtic Connections and Edinburgh International Festival.
Catriona is Co-Artistic Director of the string ensemble Thirteen North with fellow RAM alumna Emily Davis. She is also one half of pop-folk duo Twelfth Day and a member of acclaimed folk band Fara. Across all her work, she is passionate about breaking down genre boundaries and building meaningful collaborations across cultures and art forms.
