Proudly supporting the careers of young musicians and artists in the Commonwealth, Europe and USA, The Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) hosts an annual programme of competitions, scholarships, residencies, concerts and events, including the ROSL Annual Music Competition, which is now in its 74th year.
The Singers Section Final 2026 took place at ROSL on 17 February, with all finalists and their accompanists being Academy-trained.
Royal Academy Opera graduate and Bicentenary Scholar (2024-25) Binny Supin Yang took home first place. A former ABRSM International Postgraduate Scholar, member of the Academy Song Circle and Josephine Baker Trust Artist, Binny has given solo recitals at Wigmore Hall, Korea Cultural Centre UK and Kumho Art Hall Yonsei. She is an alum of the Georg Solti Accademia and a former Emerging Artist with Seoul Arts Center. In 2025, she participated in the Leeds Lieder Young Artist Programme.
Last night she was accompanied by pianist Tom Scott and will go on to compete in the Gold Medal final taking place at Wigmore Hall this July.
"The preparation and participation in the ROSL competition has been an incredible journey and I have had incredible support from so many people. It was a great privilege to perform with Thomas Scott, a piano fellow at the Royal Academy of Music. I would especially like to thank my voice teacher, Mary Nelson, who has remained incredibly supportive even after my graduation and came to hear me in the Final. I am also very grateful to Kate Paterson for her continued support. I still vividly remember singing the Bell Song in my very first Platform class at the Academy, and it felt especially meaningful to return to that aria in the Final. Finally, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Bicentenary Scholarship Fund for its continued support, as well as to my coaches Richard Stokes, Jonathan Papp, Peter Robinson, Brenda Hurley, and my acting teacher David Antrobus, all of whom have played an essential role in bringing me to this point."

Binny was joined on stage by the following current Academy students:
- Charlotte Clapperton (Royal Academy Opera second year) - accompanied by Daniel Silcock. Charlotte is generously supported by the Derek Butler Award.
- Caroline Blair (Royal Academy Opera second year) - accompanied by Daniel Silcock. Caroline is generously supported by the Norman Ayrton Award.
- Klara Solen (BMUS fourth year due to join Royal Academy Opera this September) - accompanied by George Herbert
"I am so overwhelmed and grateful to have had the chance to perform in the singer’s final of the ROSL competition last night, it all feels a bit surreal! It was such a joy to get to perform my programme that I had put a lot of time and effort into alongside George Herbert, and the audience’s enthusiasm made the evening a very memorable one. Getting to share the experience with three incredible singers from the Academy who made the atmosphere warm and friendly just made the whole evening so much better and I felt very proud to be representing the Academy alongside all my fellow competitors."
Klara Solen
The Academy are proud to have been well represented at the awards, and offer congratulations to Binny, Charlotte, Caroline and Klara for their success. We wish Binny luck in the Gold Medal final this Summer.
