In celebration of the Academy's location in the borough of Westminster and reflecting the five 'fair areas' the council is committed to for residents, Luca has composed a new piece for brass quintet.
Fairer Westminster is a new piece written for a group of two trumpets, French horn, trombone and tuba. It will be performed by Queentet, an all-female brass group of Academy musicians. The piece is split into five sections, each named after one of five targets set by Westminster City Council to promote positive change in the borough.
Of the new commission, Luca said: 'Being asked to write this piece has been an incredibly exciting opportunity and I cannot thank the Lord Mayor and the Academy enough. The social dimension of his commission, based on Westminster City Council’s Fairer Westminster plan, has made this project very unusual and extremely stimulating. I am also looking forward to working on the piece with the amazing players in Queentet as we gear up to its premiere!’
The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg added: 'I have always been so impressed by the standard of music and composition from the students at the Royal Academy of Music. Every concert I’ve attended has always left me in awe of the talent by our young musicians and Luca is no exception.
When I met Luca in June, his passion and knowledge of music was infectious. I am in no doubt the commissioned Fairer Westminster Suite will be loved by everyone when it premieres on the 31 October.'
