Emma-Ruth has been described as 'a composer of exceptional refinement and subtlety [with] a gift for writing idiomatic, deeply expressive pieces which are lucid, impassioned and compelling' (Musical Opinion, Paul Conway).

Emma-Ruth's most recent work is a piano étude Escape for Tamara Stefanovich commissioned by Philharmonie Luxembourg. Emma-Ruth and artist/writer Nicola Chalmers have recently begun work on a new chamber music project for Camerata Pacifica, California. March 2020 saw the world premiere tour of Until a Reservoir No Longer Remains, a new cello duet commissioned by Guy Johnston and Sheku Kanneh-Mason which culminated with a final performance at the Southbank Centre as part of the International Chamber Music Series.

Other recent works include a solo aria Secure the Ghosts for the National Opera Studio, and a new string quartet Tenebris Litterarum (Dark Letters) for the Carducci Quartet at Presteigne Festival 2020. The Sail of a Flame, commissioned by BBC Radio 3 for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and mezzo Lucy Schaufer, was premiered and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in January 2020. In 2019 Emma-Ruth was awarded the PRS Composer's Fund to complete Traffick, an opera written with librettist Nicola Chalmers.
