ARTHUR SULLIVAN Trial by Jury (libretto WS Gilbert)

Trial by Jury marks the first ever staging of any Gilbert and Sullivan in the Susie Sainsbury Theatre, giving alumni Sir Arthur Sullivan a long-overdue spotlight on the Academy’s stage. This witty one-act operetta follows a jilted bride, an opportunistic defendant, and a hopelessly biased jury as a breach-of-promise case spirals into comic chaos. Often dismissed as light entertainment, Gilbert and Sullivan’s work is in fact sharp, satirical, and musically ingenious. Our new production celebrates part of Sullivan’s legacy while giving young performers the chance to reclaim this repertoire with fresh theatrical energy.
