EDWARD HARRIS-BROWN and AVRAM HARRIS The Daoshi Ballads

Hanshan, a mountain-dwelling 9th century poet and Buddhist monk (daoshi), was a figure so reclusive the authenticity of his existence is debatable. His many compact, contemplative poems depict his transcendental sojourn to the mythical Cold Mountain. The spirituality of these poems gained Hanshan a cult following with the Beat Generation writers of the 1950s, including Gary Snyder- whose 'Cold Mountain Poems' - adaptations of 24 of Hanshan's works- are the chief inspiration for this project. Readings of these will be complemented by electroacoustic musical responses written by cousins Edward Harris-Brown and Avram Harris, and projections of Tang dynasty art contemporaneous with Hanshan’s original works. The audience can expect a largely soothing atmosphere and can aim to leave feeling spiritually stimulated!
