How did musicians make a living in 19thcentury London? ‘Hackney labour’ was a phrase used by HJ Banister in 1843 to describe the churning out of commercial music for amateur performers. Alum Declan Hickey explores this in relation to jobbing musician William Ball (1784-1869) through live performances on historical instruments and engagement with displays from the Academy’s Collections.
