Silent Film Improvisation with sound artist Caroline Ledoux
A collaboration between Robert Sholl and Caroline Ledoux - a historical sound-artist based in Lausanne - connected to a Knowledge Exchange project with schools.
Researcher: Robert Sholl
Silent film was most often performed with piano or organ improvisation, sometimes with orchestra, but also with noises and voices that increase the realism of the work. This project explores how different musical languages, some quite contemporary, can be used with different types of film. The films range from the French féeries of Georges Méliès – films that essentially came out of his experience as an illusionist and derive from a 19th century culture of magic coupled with an interest in different forms of theatre – to horror, cartoons and images from nature. The improvisations use aspects of repertoire or references to repertoire and dissolve them into the material as part of the artistic research.
