Christian Thielemann, Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music and Chief Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden, returns to the Academy to conduct Strauss’s tone poem, Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration).

When Strauss visited the Academy in 1936, he conducted this work with the Academy’s orchestra in the Duke’s Hall. The score from that performance, with annotations by Ernest Read, is held in the Academy’s archives.

This performance was recorded live in January 2016 in a concert to mark 80 years since Strauss’s visit.
