Soundbox is a series of events inspired by the Academy’s Museum and collections. Presented by Peter Sheppard Skærved, violinist and Viotti Lecturer, the events explore the historical and contemporary relationships between performers, composers, instruments and instrument-makers.

Conversations. Music, architecture, instruments

Peter Sheppard Skaerved explores the dialogues, imaginary and real, between the music and architecture of the early 18th Century. When the great architect Nicholas Hawksmoor died in 1747, the six-day auction of his belongings included violins by the great Cremonese and London makers, and music by Corelli, Mateis, Handel, and many others. What might these mean for us? Might his love of music-making tell us something about his work as an architect, and vice versa?
