Programme:
Schnittke Moz-Art à la Haydn
Stravinsky Concerto in E flat, ‘Dumbarton Oaks’
Stravinsky Pulcinella Suite

Directed by Clio Gould, the Sainsbury Royal Academy Soloists comprises the finest young string players from the Academy. Today they are joined by woodwind and brass students in a programme which demonstrates the influence of the great Baroque and Classical masters on Soviet composers Schnittke and Stravinsky.

Schnittke’s unabashedly comical Moz-Art à la Haydn is based on an unfinished fragment by Mozart and includes various historical references, including Haydn’s ‘Farewell’ Symphony. Stravinsky’s Concerto in E flat was inspired by Bach’s Brandenburg concertos and takes its name from the estate in Washington DC owned by Robert Woods Bliss and Mildred Barnes Bliss, who commissioned the work for their thirtieth wedding anniversary. The concert concludes with the Suite from Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, the ballet based on an eighteenth-century play whose main character originates from commedia dell’arte. The work features musical themes by Pergolesi expertly adapted and manipulated by Stravinsky for the twentieth century.
