Edward Gardner conductor
Mahler Symphony no.5

Edward Gardner, Sir Charles Mackerras Chair of Conducting and Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, returns to the Academy for a performance of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony.

Composed at the beginning of the twentieth century and premiered in Cologne in 1904, this work is perhaps best remembered for the introductory trumpet motif, which mimics the rhythm of the opening bars of Beethoven’s Fifth. At over an hour long, the symphony epitomises the composer’s trademark use of vast orchestral forces to portray a huge range of emotions.

Sold out - returns only.
