Book of Songs

Friday, 25.09.2015 14:30, Museum Piano Gallery

The ancient Chinese Book of Songs, a compilation of 305 poems said to have been edited by Confucius, is an important part of the bedrock of Chinese literary, political, artistic and aesthetic culture. In this event, illustrated by ancient manuscripts, Colin Huehns explores mentions of musical performance in the text and what they tell us about Chinese performance traditions. This will include performances on bamboo flutes and other Chinese instruments. Benjamin Britten set two poems from the Book of Songs in his Songs from the Chinese: through performance of these, and new compositions by Academy students especially written for this event, we continue our journey of interpretation and exegesis.
