Exchange programmes for External Students to study at the Academy

The Academy has exchange agreements and study-abroad agreements with many conservatoires across the world. These are normally for students on a Bachelor Degree programme who seek an exchange placement at the Academy’s BMus Year 3 level, but can also be for students studying on a Masters programme.

The deadline for receipt of exchange/study-abroad applications is 1 March for the following academic year.

Exchange and study abroad placements are normally for a full academic year.
Students are encouraged to commence their placements at the beginning of the Academy’s academic year (September); although we may be able to offer shorter placements, students who commence later in the year are unlikely to be able to join academic classes as these are mostly run on a full-year basis.

Please be aware that attending for only part of a year may mean you miss standard assessment dates; this will affect whether you can be awarded credits for your study period, and also whether we can provide a transcript for your home institution. For that reason, a single term's attendance will not usually gain any credits; the minimum attendance period to gain credits for undergraduate (bachelor-level) placements is one term (trimester), September to December, or January to April. Please consult our course books on the Academy Handbooks web page.

We regret, however, that it is not possible to offer exchange or study-abroad placements to study Conducting, Choral Conducting, Musical Theatre, Opera, Repetiteur, or for the Research degree programme (MPhil/PhD).

Exchange conditions and deadline

The Academy’s exchanges are normally a reciprocal arrangement. If a reciprocal student cannot be found, you may instead be offered a Study Abroad studentship. Your exchange/study-abroad placement must form part of your degree studies at your home institution, and the application must be sent by your Exchange or Study Abroad office, we regret we are unable to accept individual direct applications.

Please begin by asking your own institution’s Exchange Coordinator or Study Abroad officer for further details about applying for a placement at the Academy; they can find additional information by logging into the Members area of www.aec-music.eu and visiting the Academy's section, or by contacting admissions@ram.ac.uk. We require exchange and year-abroad applicants to use the Learning Agreement form in conjunction with the paper application form.

Deadline
The deadline for receipt of exchange/study-abroad applications is 1 March for the following academic year, and we aim to respond with a decision during May.

Application
Your application for exchange or study abroad (which can be emailed as PDFs by your Exchange coordinator) should include:

Application Form (with your photograph) including the course level and study year of the proposed placement (for example, BMus Year 3)
AEC Learning Agreement [pdf] (Please consult our course books on the Academy Handbooks web page)
Curriculum Vitae
Letter of motivation
Reference letter from your teacher

Academic transcript from your current study programme
Video recording: around 20 minutes of current repertoire, verified as being an authentic recording of your performance.
(Timpani & Percussion candidates: please record the repertoire detailed on the Percussion audition page).
Your video recording,
verified by your own institution, should be uploaded to DecisionDesk

Study Abroad and Exchange placements are only available at Bachelor Degree Year 3 or higher. To help us place you correctly in our own course structures, your current study year and academic programme [for example, Bachelor degree Year 2] must be clear in your application form, also please state the academic level of your proposed study placement at the Academy.
For example, if you expect to complete your Bachelor studies in the year of your application and progress to a Masters course in the year of your requested placement, please make this clear in your application so we can assess you for joining us at postgraduate level.
The institution providing the Masters course must confirm that you hold the place, because the placement must form part of degree studies at your home institution.

Information about our course credit structures, to assist with compiling the Learning Agreement, is available from the course books on the Academy Handbooks web page.

You are welcome to indicate a preference for studying with a particular professor at the Academy, however the final decision about allocating students to professors is made by the Head of Faculty and it may not be possible for you to study with the professor you have requested.

Placements will require an Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreement, or [for non-Erasmus+] a Memorandum of Understanding/Study Abroad agreement.

Year Abroad and Exchange students at the Academy are expected to return to their home institution on completion of their placement period here.
If they decide to apply to join one of our degree programmes as a full student, they must do so separately within the normal framework for external candidates via UCAS Conservatoires; deadlines and requirements are available through www.ram.ac.uk/apply, and agreement in writing must be provided from their home institution where this would be a transfer from their current studies. All students on exchange programmes will be subject to the Academy’s Regulations. Please note that it is not possible to transfer into Year 4 of our BMus programme.

If English is not your first language, exchange/year-abroad study placements require language skills equivalent to at least IELTS 6.0.

ERASMUS+

The Academy has been awarded an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) under the Erasmus+ scheme, and was a founding member of the Erasmus movement. We are also a member of AEC (Association of European Conservatoires). The Charter is available through the Quick Link on the left of this screen.

Our ERASMUS institution code is UK LONDON023.
Our PIC is 946054581.

Following the June vote for the UK to leave the EU, the Erasmus+ UK National Agency has confirmed that there will be no change for 2016 or 2017. The rules about leaving the EU are detailed in the Lisbon Treaty (Article 50), acknowledging a period of two years of negotiations before the UK completes the necessary process to leave the EU, so Erasmus+ opportunities will still be available for the 2017/18 academic year.
