Performance requirements



Postgraduate Certificate, Master of Arts and Master of Music, (Level 7 in the UK’s Regulated Qualification Framework [RQF])

A performance standard at least equivalent to that of a recognised music performance diploma in your Principal Study.

Professional Diploma (RQF Level 7)

A performance standard at least equivalent to recognised postgraduate degrees and a clear sense of a direction (specialism) for further study.

Advanced Diploma (Performance) (RQF Level 8)

A performance standard at least equivalent to a Distinction at Master’s level.

Royal Academy Opera (Adv Dip)

Entry to the programme will be dependent on the applicant’s ability to demonstrate at audition and interview that s/he will be able to achieve and sustain the standards required to participate in Royal Academy Opera productions and scenes, and that s/he will be able to synthesise the knowledge, skills and experience demanded of participation in Royal Academy Opera’s artistic and educational projects.


Academic requirements



MA and MMus (RQF Level 7)

A good Honours Bachelor degree (normally in Music: RQF Level 6) otherwise an international qualification of an equivalent standard (for example, 1st Cycle in the Bergen Declaration of the Bologna Process) from a university or educational institution of university rank is required.

MPhil (RQF Level 8)

An upper second-class honours Bachelor degree and it is preferable also to have a Master’s degree.

Post-Masters Diplomas (ProfDip, AdvDip, Royal Academy Opera)

A Master’s qualification or equivalent (in a relevant subject) but the Academy welcomes applications from students who may not meet the normal requirements (see APEL below).

Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert)

No academic entrance requirement.


International awards and qualifications


If your qualification was gained in Italy and you have been awarded a conservatoire Diploma or university Laurea, we will need the full title of the award (for example: ‘Diploma Accademico di Secondo Livello’) and also a copy of your Diploma di Esame di Stato certificate.

Students from Italy can use an Italian conservatoire’s Diploma Accademico of either level to matriculate onto a taught Master’s degree (MA or MMus).

USA and Canada

The following equivalencies are used for students studying under the USA/Canadian grade point average (GPA) marking scheme:
First-class Honours: GPA 3.6/4.0
Upper second-class Honours: GPA 3.3/4.0
Lower second-class Honours: GPA 3.0/4.0

Transfer of credit

We do not accept transfers into our postgraduate programmes from another higher education institution. Candidates should instead apply for entry to Year 1 of their chosen postgraduate programme.

Accreditation of Prior and Experiential Learning (APEL)

If you wish to join a postgraduate programme at the Academy and your education background means you have not gained a Bachelor degree or an equivalent qualification, please see our APEL guidance.

You may be given additional interviews following your entrance audition to determine your preparedness for study at this level. These interviews will include an APEL process if this is deemed appropriate. Any additional interviews will be conducted by one of the postgraduate tutors and/or an APEL panel consisting of the Head of Programme and Deputy Principal (Programmes and Research).
