English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate that you have sufficient language proficiency before your study programme begins.

We need to receive your test result by 1 May before enrolment. Please send all your test results to the Academy's Admissions Team [admissions@ram.ac.uk] to help us track your progress.

The Academy will accept either of these tests:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic test, not General Training. It it not necessary to take the IELTS UKVI test)
  • PTE Academic Test

You should take the examination for either IELTS or PTE Academic soon after accepting a place at the Academy, so we receive your result by 1 May.

The IELTS and PTE Academic websites have information about where and when you can take their tests. The British Council has information about English language courses, and you can try out the IELTS test on www.roadtoielts.com.
If you take the IELTS test, please tell the test centre to send your result electronically to the Academy, that is a free service and will avoid delays.
If you take the PTE test please send us your Score Report Code.

We will accept TOEFL results if the IELTS and PTE Academic tests are unavailable in your country. TOEFL equivalent scores are listed below.

If you are not an EU or EEA citizen and will need a student visa, please see the additional requirements detailed in the Language test requirements for UK Tier 4 visa applications section below.

Language test requirements for Tier 4 Student Visa applications

For students who are not EU or EEA citizens and who need a Tier 4 General Student visa, UK Visas and Immigration requires a score no lower than IELTS 5.5 or PTE Academic 51 (CEFR B2) for each individual element of the test (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and you must gain an overall score of at least IELTS 5.5 or PTE Academic 51 (CEFR B2).

The Academy accepts the IELTS Academic Test, and the PTE Academic test, taken at any IELTS or PTE Academic test centre, to support a Tier 4 visa application.

The Academy also accepts IELTS 'UKVI' test results, though it is not necessary for you to go to an 'Approved SELT' centre or to take a 'UKVI' test.

UKVI and the Academy will accept IELTS Academic and PTE Academic scores gained on different test dates, so you can combine results if the scores are not more than two years old, and you do not need to pass all the individual elements on the same test date. However, if you take a 'IELTS UKVI' test at an Approved SELT centre, all the scores have to be gained at a single test.

You are exempt from having to take a language test for your visa if you are a national of Antigua & Barbados, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, and the USA, or if you completed an academic qualification equivalent to a UK degree which was taught in any of those countries excluding Canada and including the UK. The full list of UKVI exemptions is published in the Tier 4 Migrant Guidance on https://www.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa/knowledge-of-english : ‘full visa guidance’ PDF, paragraph 323 in the June 2019 version.

Otherwise, you will need to take a test and gain satisfactory scores before the Academy can sponsor your visa application.

The Academy may still require a language test result, even if you are exempt for visa purposes, if we are concerned about your language skills.

English language welcome week

The Academy offers a short ‘acclimatisation’ course, by invitation only, to selected international students before the beginning of the academic year. The course includes an introduction to the Academy and to London life. However, this course cannot replace the requirement for gaining a satisfactory official test score.
