This excerpt comes from the second movement of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Manfred’ Symphony. The music is programmatic and based on Byron’s dramatic poem of the same name.

This concert was conducted by Klemperer Chair of Conducting, Semyon Bychkov, a leading interpreter of Tchaikovsky who has recorded many of his symphonic works (including ‘Manfred’) with the Czech Philharmonic.

Speaking about the composer, Bychkov said: ‘I’ve loved Tchaikovsky’s music ever since I can remember. Like all first loves, this one never died’.
