Spanish mezzo-soprano Julia Portela Piñón is in her first year at Royal Academy Opera

She is studying with Caitlin Hulcup, Yvonne Howard and Iain Ledingham and is supported by the Norman Ayrton Award.

In 2017 Julia was commended in the Marjorie Thomas Art of Song Prize and in 2020 was a prizewinner in the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg International Singing Competition.

With Royal Academy Opera, Julia has sung in the chorus of Orphée aux enfers and Chérubin, and recently performed the role of Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Other operatic appearances include Angelina in La Cenerentola; Idamante in Idomeneo and Meg in Falstaff at Iain Ledingham’s Opera Scenes Summer Course; and Mercédès in Carmen, Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus and the title role in Giulio Cesare for Royal Academy Opera Scenes. During the pandemic, Julia performed the title role in Iolanthe in a virtual production organised by Green Opera.
