Description
Portrait of Belle Cole by George E. Hendry, 1903. Three-quarter length, seated, with a copy of Handel's 'Messiah' on her lap. Wearing a black dress with heavy lace and net mantilla-like sleeves, possibly a shawl, and a deep red corsage on her left shoulder. With a black velvet neck ribbon decorated with jewels, diamond earrings and a red rose in her hair. A deep red curtain of a fabric with flying birds hangs to her right. A heavily jewelled pin is worn on on the right of her dress, and she wears a large ring on her right index finger. Looking to the viewer. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in paint on the lower left border 'George E. Hendry 1903'. In a heavy gilded frame.
