Royal Academy Opera: your experience

Royal Academy Opera is a specialist and intensive Postgraduate Advanced Diploma for singers with the potential and aspiration to succeed as principals at the highest international standard.

The human body is the singer’s instrument; physical fitness, agility, stage technique, communication and vocal skills, together with a broad repertoire, are all prerequisites for today’s opera singers and we are committed to equipping our singers to be knowledgeable, professional and world-class performers.

Royal Academy Opera functions as a small opera company with an educational framework that provides a bridge to a professional career, using a combination of one-to-one tuition and coaching and group classes and productions. Singers accepted on this course have access to specific Royal Academy of Opera funding opportunities and normally hold a Masters degree or have had relevant professional experience.

Professors and Directors

Our opera and singing professors are dedicated teachers and active performers with a huge variety of professional careers. Collectively, they have a wide range of industry knowledge and insight into all aspects of the opera profession. Guest conductors and directors, along with Visiting Professors, supplement the Academy’s own team. In recent years, students have enjoyed the inspiring leadership of the former Head of Opera Jane Glover, Stuart Bedford, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Trevor Pinnock and the late Sir Colin Davis. Distinguished opera directors recently have included Stephen Barlow, John Copley, John Cox, Paul Curran, David Pountney and John Ramster.

Teachers are allocated after successful auditions; students can express a desire to study with a specific teacher and the Head of Vocal Studies will review such requests. All aspiring operatic candidates should apply to audition for Royal Academy Opera. If the audition panel feels you are not yet ready for entry to this specialist postgraduate programme, you may be offered a place on the Preparatory Opera Curriculum Pathway with a view to re-auditioning for Royal Academy Opera in the following year.
