Piano, Piano accompaniment and Repetiteur auditions

These requirements are for students auditioning to start their studies at the Academy in September 2018. Until specified otherwise, these requirements also apply for auditions in future years. Some audition requirements may change: please check back here regularly. You are welcome to contact the Registry or the department administrator if you have any queries. Please see www.ram.ac.uk/apply for application details.

The precise format for auditions will be different according to your Principal Study. As time is limited for some auditions, you may be interrupted before you have performed a complete piece; there will also be a short interview, where you will be asked about the music you have played, and any particular interests you have.

You should offer a free-choice programme of solo piano music (not concerto repertoire), a minimum of three works.
Undergraduates: the programme should be 20–40 minutes long;
Postgraduates the programme should be 40–60 minutes long.
The programme can include movements of works and should show a wide diversity of character and style as well as evidence of technical accomplishment. The audition panel will select from this programme within the time limits available, but you may specify one work which you particularly wish to perform.

Please note: Your programme should be played from memory, though complex contemporary music may be played from the score. You do not need to send your repertoire list to the Academy before your audition.

London auditions
Bachelor of Music and Gap Year candidates: your audition with the panel will last for 20 minutes.
Postgraduate candidates: the audition panel will have a two-round system [first round then a recall] with a morning and an afternoon session, and the recall will be in the same session as the first round.

See below for other general requirements for Bachelor, Gap Year and Postgraduate candidates.

Audition requirements: Piano Accompaniment

(postgraduates only)

UCAS Conservatoires course codes:
Master of Arts 1 yr 700F / 2 yr 702F, Master of Music 1 yr 807F / 2 yr 805F, Professional Diploma 903F, Continuing Professional Development Diploma 908F, Advanced Diploma (Performance) W301.

You should prepare a programme (minimum 20 minutes) of songs and/or instrumental works, and including a short, technically demanding solo work. Some tests of musicianship and keyboard skills may be given.

You are expected to provide your own soloist/s for the audition.
However, at the London audition session the Academy will provide soloists with no charge for the following programme:

  • Beethoven: ‘Spring’ Sonata in F major op.24 for violin and piano, first movement
  • Brahms: Von ewiger Liebe, in C sharp minor (high key)
  • Debussy: Green, in G flat major (high key)

Please contact the Academy Registry at least 4 weeks before the first day of our audition session if you wish to choose this option; you will be able to rehearse with the soloists in the 30 minutes directly preceding your audition time, however we regret no additional rehearsal time is possible.

Alternatively if you wish to perform different repertoire at the London audition session, with 4 weeks' notice the Academy will endeavour to provide soloists for your specified repertoire for a fee of £50 per soloist, to include one 30-minute rehearsal. Extra rehearsal can be arranged with the soloist for £30 per hour. However, if you request very difficult or obscure repertoire it may not be possible to provide soloists. Please contact the Academy Registry with your repertoire list at least 4 weeks before the first day of our audition session if you wish to choose this option, and payment details (bank transfer) will be sent to you.

We regret we cannot provide soloists if your chosen audition centre is not London.

See below for other general requirements for postgraduate candidates.
