Pianist, researcher, writer and lecturer

In addition to his work as a teacher, Roderick is a writer and pianist who has been described as “possessor of devastating musicality and technique” by the Sunday Times. Recent projects include recordings of Michael Finnissy’s Quintettsatz and completion of Grieg’s Piano Quintet with the Kreutzer Quartet, which was “strongly recommended” by the BBC Music Magazine, and Stockhausen’s Mantra with Mark Knoop and Newton Armstrong on the Hathut label. Concert appearances have included recitals at the 2013 and 2014 Bergen Festival with Peter Sheppard Skaerved, solo works by Lachenmann at the London Contemporary Music Festival and Godowsky violin and piano works at Wigmore Hall with Academy alumna Nazrin Rashidova; he has also performed at Auditorium du Louvre, Tokyo Opera City and Kioi Hall, and the Kennedy Center. Live performances broadcast on the BBC have ranged from the ‘Spring’ Sonata to solo works by Richard Barrett, Laurence Crane and Will Gregory, and he has also broadcast on Radio France and KBS Korea.

In 2012 he gave a possibly unprecedented performance of Messiaen’s Catalogue d’oiseaux and La Fauvette des jardins in one evening at the Academy, and he is currently preparing a co-authored book on the Catalogue with Peter Hill. In 2008 he was artistic advisor to the Academy in its year-long Messiaen Centenary Festival in collaboration with Southbank Centre. He is a member of the ensembles CHROMA and Plus Minus, and has performed with them at festivals around Europe including Huddersfield, Ultima and Borealis in Norway and TRANSIT (Leuven).

He first encountered Messiaen’s music at Chetham’s School, where he was taught by Heather Slade-Lipkin and Charles Hopkins, before going on to study with W Dean Sutcliffe, Peter Pettinger and Hamish Milne at St Catharine’s College and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and on the MMus at the Academy. He was given the title of Reader at the Academy in 2013.
