Peter enjoys an extensive and varied career as an opera conductor and coach. After studying music at St John’s College Oxford, where he was Organ Scholar, he joined the music staff at Glyndebourne, becoming Chorus Master there at the age of 23. He then spent seven years with the Australian Opera as Resident Conductor and Head of Music Staff, and has returned to Australia regularly as a guest conductor ever since: in recent visits he has conducted Aida, Andrea Chénier, La Fanciulla del West and Turandot.

As Assistant Music Director of English National Opera for eight years, he conducted much of the company’s repertoire, including The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Otello, and The Turn of the Screw, as well as Jonathan Miller’s productions of Rigoletto and The Mikado. He has also conducted for Kent Opera, Scottish Opera, and since 2003, for Opera Holland Park, where he has enjoyed great success with L’amore dei tre Re, I gioielli della Madonna, La Wally and Falstaff amongst others. From 2006 to 2014 he was Artistic Director of British Youth Opera.

As a vocal coach, he works regularly at the National Opera Studio (since 1981) and the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme. At the Academy he has conducted operas by Mozart, Britten and Vaughan Williams, and conducted the Royal Academy Opera’s double bill of Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi.
