Two Academy students awarded Arts Society Commissions

Two Academy composition students have been commissioned to write new works by The Arts Society Greater London Area.

As part of the The Arts Society Golden Jubilee celebrations, postgraduate composers were invited to apply for to write a new piece for The Arts Society Greater London Area’s Kings Place concert on 24 November 2018.

The winner, Joseph Howard, received a cash prize to write a new work for the London Mozart Players and soloists. Joseph is currently a PhD student at the Academy under the tutelage of Philip Cashian. He writes new music for classical instruments and has had his work performed across the country and internationally.

Alex Woolf was awarded the runner-up prize and will have his work performed in a concert at the Academy. Alex is currently studying with David Sawer and Huw Watkins. His music has been broadcast several times on BBC Radio 3 and performed both across the UK and internationally.

The Arts Society offers opportunities to discover and support the arts of yesterday, today and tomorrow and provides grants to encourage the development of skills in the arts and heritage.

Both students were invited to meet the Duchess of Gloucester at a preview of The Arts Society’s exhibition at Two Temple Place, ‘Rhythm & Reaction - The Age of Jazz in Britain’.
