Six Academy Students in BBC Young Musician of the Year Finals

The Academy is delighted to announce that three undergraduate students and three Junior Academy students have been selected for the BBC Young Musician of the Year Category Finals.

The brainchild of BBC producers Humphrey Burton, Walter Todds and Roy Tipping, the competition has developed an enviable reputation for finding superstar musicians.

The series will once again be broadcast on BBC Television, beginning with coverage of the Category Finals on BBC4 in March, with complementary coverage on BBC Radio 3. The last series, broadcast in 2016, was won by Academy student Sheku Kanneh-Mason.

This year’s participants from the Academy are:

Michaias Berlouis bass trombone
A first-year student at the Academy, Michaias is currently taught by Bob Hughes. Michaias was recently offered a place in the European Union Youth Wind Orchestra. Last year, he achieved an LRSM diploma on bass trombone and won the Senior Orchestra Brass Prize from Chetham’s School of Music.

Robert Burton saxophone
18-year-old saxophonist Rob Burton currently studies with Simon Haram at the Academy. He previously studied at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and was principal saxophone in the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain.

Adam Heron piano
A first-year student at the Academy, Adam is currently studying with Christopher Elton. Recent achievements include first prize at the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe’s Junior Intercollegiate Beethoven Competition 2017, winner of the Irish Heritage Music Award 2017 and winner of Gloucestershire Young Musician of the Year 2016.

Elodie Chousmer-Howelles violin
A Year 13 student, Elodie was recently offered a scholarship to study at the Academy starting in September 2018. She currently studies with Nicole Wilson and is a former member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and current member of Chineke!.

Jeneba Kanneh-Mason piano
Jeneba is a Year 11 student and studies with Patsy Toh. She is a previous winner of the Junior Academy Iris Dyer Piano Prize.

Alex Pullen percussion
A Year 10 student, Alex is taught by Natxo Molins and is the youngest finalist from the Academy this year. He is a member of Buckinghamshire County Youth Orchestra and Buckinghamshire County Wind Ensemble.
