Professor Jane Glover CBE

In June 2016, Professor Jane Glover will step down as Director of Royal Academy Opera after eight years. During this time, Jane has led the department with exceptional vision and flair, arguably moving Royal Academy Opera into pole position amongst international opera-training programmes.

We are delighted that from July 1st 2016, Professor Glover will become the Royal Academy of Music’s first ‘Felix Mendelssohn Emeritus Professor of Music’ — in which role she will continue to contribute to the Academy’s musical life as a conductor, coach, mentor and researcher. The Mendelssohn Scholarship Committee has recently given its blessing for the Academy to use Mendelssohn’s name following the composer’s early involvement in helping his English colleagues to establish Britain’s senior conservatoire.

Whilst the new Theatre is being built, Jane will lead Royal Academy Opera during its exciting forthcoming 2015–16 season in significant London venues in London, starting with Le nozze di Figaro in the Hackney Empire directed by Dame Janet Suzman.

Professor Glover said: ‘After what will have been eight years in this exhilarating, challenging and utterly rewarding position, it is time for me to hand the tiller of Royal Academy Opera to another and to continue pursuing my other activities around the world. But I am thrilled to be remaining at the Academy in my new position, to witness therefore the re-opening of our wonderful new theatre and also to be involved in other, non-operatic activities.’

The Principal, Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, said: ‘Jane has moved Royal Academy Opera to new heights, with next year doubtless set to produce more outstanding results under her leadership. I’m thrilled that her appointment as our first Mendelssohn Professor ensures that we can continue to draw on Jane’s remarkable educational and artistic talents.’

The Academy will advertise for a new Head of Opera in Summer 2015, with a view to appointing during the Autumn Term.
